iPhone 6 data recovery

have an iPhone that's stuck in DFU mode so my 19,000 photos saved on it are stuck on it. Any ideas for getting them off? Not worried about the phone just the data on it!

Thanks in advance

The situation you have faced is similar to many iPhone users. One of the best options which can help you in this situation is the backup. If you have created backup of all your lost photos in iCloud or iTunes then you can get them very easily. Otherwise you can follow the below mentioned way to get out of the DFU mode:

Use iTunes

  • First start iTunes
  • After that connect your iPhone to PC via USB cable
  • Then hold iPhone’s HOME and Sleep/wake button for at least 10 seconds
  • After that release both buttons and press the sleep/wake button

At last, wait for the time until it starts which will tell you that your device is out of DFU mode. This is one of the best way to solve the situation you have faced.

It would be easy to get your iPhone out of DFU mode with the help of iTunes. Just connect your iPhone to latest iTunes version and wait for iTunes identify your device. Next, hold down your power and home button for 10s, and release the home button but continue press power button until your device restart. In this way, your iPhone can get back to normal disk mode safely.

But as for photo recovery, the easiest way for you is to restore your iTunes backup. Otherwise, try to recover them from iCloud.com or iCloud Photo Library if you have set up to sync before, as introduced in the recover lost photos from iPhone article.

If it is in DFU mode then making a backup now is not an option as there is no way to do it. All you can do is restore it in iTunes and hopefully you have an iTunes or iCloud backup in place to then restore content from. If you do not already have a backup, then yes, you're going to loose content - no way around that fact.

Ultimately, with any computing device, a backup (and preferably a redundant backup) is really your only insurance against data loss.

If you have backed up your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud before this happened, you can restore the photos from iTunes or iCloud backup.

Follow below steps to restore from iTunes:

  1. Start iTunes and go to “Edit > Preferences > Devices”, and check “Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing iTunes automatically”.
  2. Plug iPhone into computer via USB cable, and iTunes will launch automatically. If not, you need to start it manually.
  3. iTunes will recognize your iPhone and display the iPhone icon at the upper right corner. Click the iPhone icon and choose “Restore Backup” in the summary panel.
  4. iTunes will warn you to erase the settings and contents before it starts restoring iPhone. Then it will restore your iPhone with the backup.
